In a relationship, truth must lead before hope.
Narcissists are good at hiding the truth within a relationship, making it difficult to have truth-based hope in a relationship. The narcissist constructs a fantasy of what they want a relationship to look like and it feels so hopeful and the empath roots into that hope. But that hope is rooted in the fantasy not in truth.
